He was born on 24 January 1924 in a family of barbers in Samastipur, Bihar. At the time of Karpoori Thakur 's birth, India was a slave country, that is why when Karpoori grew up, he participated in Mahatma Gandhi' s non-cooperation movement in 1942 so that he could also contribute to India 's freedom.

Due to choosing the path of movement, Karpoori Thakur had to go to jail many times during the British rule, but Karpoori was never afraid of these things. After this, in independent India, he contested his first assembly election from Bihar in the year 1952, in which he won and after that Karpoori always remained a part of one or the other house for life.

Karpoori Thakur was popular among the people due to his simplicity, Karpoori ji had many important posts throughout his life, but despite this, he never bought a house or car for himself. Even he did not have any ancestral land, and throughout his life, Karpoori ji always followed the path of truth and honesty.

He was appointed minister of Bihar twice

Karpoori Thakur ji became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Bihar in independent India, but he did not complete his tenure as Chief Minister even once. For the first time, Karpoori Thakur was the Chief Minister of Bihar from December 1970 to June 1971, and during this time he completed his work of providing reservation to backward castes in government jobs.

After this, for the second time Karpoori Thakur became the Chief Minister of Bihar from June 1977 to April 1979 on behalf of the Janata Party. Throughout his life, Karpoori Thakur ji had boycotted the Congress party and familyism, due to which the Congress party is attempted to hurt Karpoori ji.
