Leap Year

2024 is a leap year, which means an extra day is added to the month of February, making it a total of 29 days. Thus, giving an extra day to accomplish the goals set for the year 2024. Leap year falls after every four years, and it was previously experienced in 2020. 

Let’s delve into the scientific reasons behind the occurrence of a leap year every four years and what significance it holds.

A leap year is a calendar year that consists of an extra day compared to an ordinary year. While a common calendar year contains 365 days, with 28 days in February, a leap year contains 366 days, wherein February has 29 days. Thus, an extra day is added to the month of February in every leap year. 

The extra day is added to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year. Various astronomical events take place at different times of the year, leading to seasonal and other changes on the Earth. To synchronize the drift and to correct the physical properties of the solar system, an additional day (a leap day) in a month (leap month) is inserted.   

To understand leap year in simpler terms, the concept of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun can be taken into consideration. 

It takes around 365.25 days for the Earth to orbit the Sun. This makes a solar year, which is also a calendar year. Usually, 365.25 days are rounded to 365 days to make them easier for all. However, after every four years, the 0.25 adds to make one complete day. This one extra day is subsequently added to the calendar every four years, making it a leap year. 

Thus, the leap year simple definition is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365 days. The extra day is added to February, making it 29 days long instead of 28. Leap years occur every four years.

The last leap year fell in 2020, and after four years, in 2024, it's again a leap year with a total of 366 days. Since the 1/4th day is subtracted from 2021, 2022, and 2023; therefore, while making a calendar year in 2024, they are added along with the 1/4th day of 2024, making one complete day, thus 366 days in total. 

The concept of leap year is not new, but dating back to early civilizations as there was a high need to create synchronization between our calendars and astronomical years. 

  1. Ancient Calendars- The calendars of the Egyptians and Romans were based on solar and lunar cycles. In order to keep the calendar in line with the solar year, Romans added a month periodically, called an intercalary month, to keep the synchronization. 
  2. Julian Calendar- It is a reformed Roman calendar wherein an extra day is added every four years to line up with the fact that every year has approximately 365.25 days. 
  3. Cesar Rule for Leap Year- Introduced by Julius Ceaser, a year divisible by 4 would be a leap year. The rule stayed effective for a short term as it created slight differences over an extended period. 
  4. Gregorian Calendar- Adjusting the Julain calendar slightly, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. It further excluded years divisible by 100 but not divisible by 400 from being leap years.
  5. Global Adoption- The Gregorian Calendar gained widespread adoption over any other calendar as it brought the average year length even closer to the solar year.
  6. Current Leap Year System- The same rules as established by the Gregorian calendar are used today to calculate the leap year. It occurs every four years, except for years divisible by 100 but not divisible by 400.

Leap Year Significance

 

Leap year holds a huge significance with regard to maintaining alignment between the calendar and the Earth's revolutions around the Sun. The absence of leap year will create an asynchronization between the astronomical events, and, as a result, seasonal changes will not correspond to the calendar months with accuracy. 

 

Therefore, leap year is essential for the following reasons-

 

  • Maintain synchronization with the astronomical events
  • Coordinate seasons with the calendar over days and months 

Here are the two thumb rules to determine a leap year-

  1. If a year is divisible by 4, it is a leap year.
  2. If a year is divisible by 100 but not divisible by 400, it is not a leap year.
  3. A century year must be divisible by 400, for example year 1900, 2000, 3000, 4000 etc.

Taking these three considerations, one can determine which year is a leap year. 

  • The concept of leap year was first introduced by Julias Ceaser in the Julain Calendar.
  • Different modifications were made by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 that are followed even today regarding leap year calculation. 
  • The frequency of leap year is approximately four years, compensating for the fact that the Earth's orbit around the Sun takes about 365.25 days.
  • The extra day added in the month of February is often called 'Leap Day.'
  • People born on Leap Day are called Leap Day babies. Often, in non-leap years, such people celebrate their birthday on 28 February or 1 March.
  • In certain countries, leap day and leap year are considered unlucky for organizing traditional functions such as weddings. 

Usually, a year has 12 calendar months from January to December, counting to 365 days. However, approximately every four years, February has 29 days instead of 28, thus making 366 days in the year. This is called a leap year.
