Flex Fuel

PrimeNewsly: Over the last few years we have been hearing a lot about flex-fuel technology. This is not a new technology as the popularity of flex-fuel vehicles began in the mid-1990s. However, in recent times, many automakers have increasingly started talking about their commitment to introduce flex-fuel cars or motorcycles. In India, the government is pushing for this technology, which has prompted automakers to focus more on this segment. With the increasing focus on green and clean fuel and powertrain solutions, flex-fuel technology has gained more prominence.

The India Mobility Expo 2024 is over, but the most talked about is the flex fuel. Vehicles running on this fuel have been the center of discussion in the expo. In such a situation, the question may also be arising in your mind that what is this flex fuel and how thousands of rupees can be saved by using this fuel. The India Mobility Expo 2024 has also featured two-wheelers as well as four-wheelers such as the Maruti WagonR. We tell you what this flex fuel is and how it will reduce India's dependence on petrol.

Today, flex fuel is being seen as an alternative to petrol-diesel. This fuel is prepared by mixing petrol with methanol and ethanol. According to media, this fuel will be changed to E20 and E50 in the coming days.

20 per cent ethanol is added to petrol to make E20. It is also a kind of petrol that is cheaper than ordinary petrol. It uses 80 per cent petrol and 20 per cent ethanol. At present, such petrol is being sold in very limited petrol pumps. Jio-BP Petrol Pump is the first company in the country to sell such petrol. The government is also trying to promote such fuels to reduce the country's dependence on petrol.

According to a report by Live Hindustan, 80 percent of petrol is used to make this special E20 petrol. Currently, petrol is being sold at Rs 96 per litre in Delhi. The price of 80 percent of such petrol will be Rs 76.80 per liter. At the same time, the price of ethanol is around Rs 55 per liter.

In such a situation, the total price of 20 % ethanol became Rs 11 per liter. The E20 petrol is priced at Rs 87.80 per litre. It became cheaper by Rs 8 per liter than the petrol sold in Delhi. It can prove to be good for the environment as well as the pocket. Using this fuel can save thousands of rupees throughout the year.

Flex-fuel also has many advantages for drivers, the country and the earth. For drivers, flex fuel, made from a mix of petrol and ethanol, comes cheaper than conventional petrol. This means that petrol blended with ethanol is cheaper, leading to significant savings for the vehicle owner in the short term.

For a country like India, high ethanol production for flex fuels means an increased focus on elements like corn and sugarcane which are used in the production of ethanol. With this, a large part of the money spent on crude oil imports can go to Indian farmers, which will help them grow themselves and boost the country's economy in a big way.

On the planet, ethanol is cleaner and greener than conventional petrol. Burning ethanol does not emit as much pollutants into the environment as burning standard petrol does. Therefore, using ethanol-based flex fuel in vehicles will reduce tailpipe emissions, thereby helping the environment.

In addition to having many advantages for the economy and the environment, flex-fuel also has some disadvantages. These include potential engine damage, low fuel economy, and lack of infrastructure.

Since flex fuel is not entirely petrol and comes with a mix of agri-source ethanol, it comes with some impurities that can be harmful to the engine. Ethanol absorbs dirt easily, which can potentially cause corrosion and damage to critical parts of the engine.

For any car owner, mileage or fuel economy remains a major concern while calculating the total cost of vehicle ownership. Ethanol-blended petrol or flex fuel is known to deliver lower mileage. This means that your flex fuel vehicle running on green fuel can run for a shorter distance than an ICE vehicle running on pure petrol. Overall, using flex fuels means that the cost of ownership becomes higher in the long run.

Conclusion

The awareness and infrastructure to support the flex fuel ecosystem in India has still not reached a satisfactory level. Therefore, it can be a daunting task for flex fuel vehicle owners to acquire flex fuel.
