Vaishali has however clinched this coveted title by defeating the Turkish FIDE Master Tamir Tarik Selbes during the IV EI Llobregat Open in Spain.  The recent performance by Vaishali Chess Grandmaster in the Grand Swizz Tournament has thrown the spotlight on the Chennai girl who has had a commendable journey so far.

Vaishali has surpassed the 2500 International Chess Federation ranking points during the tournament and has thus become the first-ever brother sister duo to become Grandmasters because her brother Praggnanandhaa is an already established chess sensation.

It seems that chess is in the DNA of Rameshbabu’s family who himself was a chess player and later introduced this fame of strategy and critical thinking to his kids. While Praggnanandhaa who is the younger of the two achieved the Grandmaster title before his sister, Vaishali had to wait for the stars to shine and bestow upon her the title which she had been craving for long. Here goes the timeline of Vaishali becoming the third female chess Grandmaster across the country:

  • She won the Girl’s World Youth Chess Championship in the under-12 category in 2012 and in the under-14 category in 2015.
  • Vaishali had defeated Magnus Carlsen in a simul competition when she was 12 years old.
  • In 2016, she went on to earn Women International Master Title and was later ranked No. 2 in India and No. 12 in the world in the under-16 category.
  • In 2018, she became a Woman Grandmaster at the Riga Technical University Chess Tournament held in Riga, Latvia.
  • She also won a gold medal at the Online Olympiad held in 2020.
  • International Master Title came her way in 2021.
  • She won the 8th Fischer Memorial in 2022 and this was her second Grandmaster norm.
  • In 2022 she defeated Bibisara Assaubayeva at FIDE Women’s Speed Chess Championship.
  • In Qatar Masters Open 2023, Vishali got her final Grandmaster norm where she finished with 5/9 and her performance rating was 2609.
  • The recent performance by Vaishali Chess Grandmaster at FIDE Women’s Grand Swizz 2023 which was held in the Isle of Man where she once again proved her core strength and scored 8.5/11 has given her a ticket for the Women’s Candidate Tournament which shall be held in Toronto in 2024.
