Indian culture is full of pious festivals and traditions, and one of them is Tulsi Vivah, which celebrates the wedding of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Tulsi. However, on this day, Lord Vishu is regarded as Shaligram, so it's a wedding ceremony of Goddess Tulsi with Shaligram.

Let's learn more about Tulsi Vivah and its process, rules, date, and significance.

What is Tulsi Vivah?

Hinduism has given religious status to many plants and trees, and one of them is Tulsi, Holy Basil. The plant is worshipped as the Goddess and considered an epitome of luck and purity. Since the medicinal use of basil is not uncommon, Tulsi is often used as medicine and worshipped as Goddess in Indian homes.

Tulsi puja vidhi is unique and plays an important religious role in everyday life. Tulsi is considered Goddess Lakshmi, and her wedding with Lord Vishnu is celebrated with humungous faith among Hindus.

Tulsi Vivah Process

Usually, the priests in temples perform Tulsi Vivah, but people can perform at their homes, too. People observing the same need to keep fast for the entire day and begin the wedding rituals right from the morning to the evening. It is one of the essential Tulsi Vivah rules

Here's the Tulsi Puja Vidhi the devotees can do to celebrate Tulsi Vivah.

  • Decorating the Vivah Mandap- Use sugarcane stalks to create a mandap for the wedding and cover it with yellow cloth. Also, prepare a beautiful rangoli beside the plant.
  • Decorate Goddess Tulsi- First, create Goddess Laxmi's face on paper, put a bindi on the forehead and nose ring, and attach it to the Tulsi plant. Now, drape a bright red saree or dupatta around the Goddess Tulsi and dress up the plant like an Indian bride. Put earrings, necklaces, and other jewelry to the plant and offer vermillion powder and turmeric.
  • Create Lord Shaligram- A photo or an idol of Lord Vishnu can be used to represent the groom, Lord Shaligram. Devotees can also use the Shaligram stone for the purpose as it is also considered as Lord Vishnu. Drape a dhoti and put a garland around the photo.
  • Bhog Preparation- Devotes need to prepare a pure vegetarian bhog (meal) for Tulsi Vivah, which is then distributed to everyone after the wedding.

The actual vivah ceremony begins in the evening. In temples, the priest performs the rituals, but at home, anyone observing fast can perform them.

Both the God and Goddess are adorned with flowers. The performer ties a yellow thread to the couple, signifying their marriage. Different wedding mantras are chanted during the rituals, and the newlyweds are showered with rice mixed with vermillion during and after all the rituals are complete.

Finally, everyone sang Tulsi aarti and congratulate each other. Later, the 'bhog' is served to the visitors of the temple and the family members at home.

One of the other essential Tulsi Vivah rules is that the person who performed the Vivah needs to eat a Tulsi leaf. It signifies that the Goddess Tulsi has blessed him/her.
