History of National Science Day

National Science Day has a long history. In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication requested the Government of India to declare 28 February as National Science Day. It was on this day that Sir C. V. deplored the 'Raman Effect'. Since then, this day is celebrated as National Science Day across India. The first National Science Day was celebrated on February 28, 1987.

About Sir C.V. Raman

Sir CV Raman was born on November 7, 1888, in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. His father, Chandrasekhara Ramanathan, was a professor of mathematics and physics at the Presidency College of the University of Madras. Raman graduated at the age of 16. He was a meritorious student and a gold medalist.

C.V. Raman Career

In 1917, he left his government job and became a professor of physics at the University of Calcutta.During his first visit to London in 1921, he met the great physicists J.J. Thomson and Lord Rutherford. He was knighted by the Royal Society of London in 1929.

C.V. Raman Awards

Along with Radhakrishnan and C. Rajagopalachari, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. Sir CV Raman was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957.

What is the Raman Effect?

The Raman Effect describes changes in the wavelength of light. When a beam of light passes through a dust-free, transparent sample of a chemical compound, a small fraction of the light is deflected in directions other than the incident (incoming) beam.

Simply put, it is the change in the wavelength of light that occurs when light rays are deflected by molecules. This is sometimes referred to as the virtual state of the molecule.

C.V. Raman was Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930 for his Discovery

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930 for the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian scientist C.V. Raman. This is the first time an Indian has won a Nobel Prize in science. National Science Day is celebrated to encourage young scientists and children of the country in honor of this discovery of Dr. CV Raman. The Government of India designated 28 February as National Science Day in 1986.
