Long ago, many men from these regions served in the Indian Army and Military Forces, protecting our country. Their brave wives prayed for their safety during their long missions. This tradition started during the Rabi cropping season, which is when wheat is sown. Women would fill earthen pots with wheat grains and offer them to God, asking for a good farming season.
In ancient India, young girls got married early, and they had to leave their homes to live with their new families. They felt lonely and missed their loved ones. To ease this loneliness, married women started celebrating Karwa Chauth together. They gathered with other married women from their village and nearby areas, forming strong friendships. They exchanged gifts like bangles, lipsticks, and sindoor to remind each other of their special bond.
Nowadays, some husbands also fast on Karwa Chauth for their wives, showing love and understanding from both sides. So, Karwa Chauth is not just about fasting; it's about love, friendship, and caring for our loved ones.
It's celebrated during the Kartik month on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha Chaturthi, which means it usually falls in October or November. In 2023, Karwa Chauth will be on Wednesday, November 1st.
People eagerly wait for this day each year, and the date changes slightly because the Hindu calendar follows the lunar cycle.
Sargi is a special meal that women eat before sunrise on Karva Chauth. They wake up very early, around 3 to 4 am, to take a bath and make their Sargi.
The most important thing is to finish eating Sargi before 5 am. This special meal gives them strength and energy for the long day of fasting ahead. It's a time when families come together, and husbands often gift their wives with Sargi to show their love and support.

On Karva Chauth in Punjab, married women begin their day before sunrise. They receive a special Bayaa from their mothers, containing clothes, coconut, sweets, fruits, and sindoor (vermillion). The daughter-in-law eats Sargi, a pre-dawn meal given by her mother-in-law, which includes fresh fruits, dry fruits, sweets, chapatis, and vegetables.
As afternoon approaches, women gather with their thalis (large plates) filled with coconut, fruits, dry fruits, a diya (lamp), kachi lassi (a milk and water drink), sweet mathri, and gifts for their mother-in-law. They sit around the idol of Goddess Parvati and listen to the Karva Chauth story narrated by an elderly woman. The women rotate their thalis seven times while singing a special song that highlights the precautions during the fast.
After the pooja, women show respect to their mothers-in-law by touching their feet and offering gifts with dry fruits.
The fast is broken when the moon rises. Women carry a sieve and a pooja thali with a diya, sweets, and water to the terrace or a place with a clear view of the moon. They look at the moon through the sieve, offer kachi lassi, and recite a prayer for their husband. Then, the husband feeds his wife the same items, and she touches his feet. Blessings are sought from the elders, and the fast is officially broken. Dinner typically consists of Sabut dal, pooris, rice, and sweets from the Bayaa.
In Uttar Pradesh, women also wake up early to have Sargi. Their Sargi includes feni soaked in sweet milk, sweets, savories, coconut, dry fruits, fara (steamed lentil dumplings), and gifts like traditional Indian wear and jewelry that symbolize their marital status. Mehendi (henna) is applied on their hands.
Before moonrise, women dress in festive attire, wear traditional jewelry and flowers, and gather with neighbors for prayers. They sing Karva Chauth songs, exchange thalis, and pray to Goddess Parvati. Some areas involve the mother-in-law and daughters-in-law performing prayers at home and exchanging karvas (specially decorated pots) with each other. Elders bless the younger women, wishing them a happy married life.
After the prayers, everyone eagerly awaits the moonrise. As soon as the moon is sighted, women offer prayers to it, sometimes drawing a moon's face on the ground with rice paste. They offer kumkum, rice, flowers, and sweets to the moon. Water is offered through their karvas seven times while chanting special prayers.
