This insurance is meant to compensate for any loss incurred in a train accident. While booking the ticket, you have to click on it and fill some details. Any passenger who books a ticket for travel through IRCTC website or app can avail this insurance facility. In addition, but only Indian citizens get the benefit of this facility, foreign citizens do not come under its provision. If you choose the option of this insurance, then if any of valuables goods are lost during the journey, then the insurance companies compensate you for that lost luggage. Apart from this, if unfortunately you meet with an accident, you get financial help in covering the medical expenses and in case of unfortunate death, compensation is provided to the dependents (passenger).
Under the Railway Travel Insurance facility, if a passenger dies or becomes permanently disabled in a train accident, an insurance amount of up to Rs 10 lakh is given. If the passenger becomes partially disabled, he is given Rs 7.5 lakh as compensation. In case of serious injury, an assistance of Rs 2 lakh is given and in case of minor injury, passengers get up to Rs 10,000 from the Railways through in insurance policy.
Insurance claim can be made within 4 months of the train accident. For this facility provided by IRCTC, you can file a claim for insurance by going to the office of the insurance company from which you have purchased the insurance.
