Gaganyaan Mission: What is Gaganyaan Mission that will take 4 Indians to Space?

The names of 4 astronauts have come up for India's first human space flight mission 'Gaganyaan'. On Tuesday (February 27, 2024), Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced their names at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The Gaganyaan Mission: Gaganyaan is India's first manned space mission. If the mission is successful, India will join countries that have launched crewed spacecraft on their own. So far, only the US, Russia and China have done so.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and reviewed the preparations for the Gaganyaan mission. During this, the Prime Minister also felicitated the four passengers who went on the mission. Earlier in October 2023, the space agency had launched Gaganyaan's first Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1). In recent times, the safe landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the lunar surface and the launch of Aditya-L1 have been the subject of discussion around the world. ISRO is now eyeing the Gaganyaan mission under which Indian astronauts will be taken to space.

What is the Gaganyaan mission?

Gaganyaan is India's first human spaceflight mission that will carry four astronauts to space. This mission can be sent by the end of 2024 or early 2025. There will be an unmanned test flight this year, in which a Vyommitra robot will be sent. The Gaganyaan mission is a three-day mission. For the mission, humans will be sent to space at a low earth orbit of 400 km and then brought back to earth safely.

What happened in the mission?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The Prime Minister reviewed the preparations for the Gaganyaan mission and felicitated four Indians on the mission. The astronauts are Group Captain Prashant Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla.

When will it be launched?

ISRO Chairman S Somanath had said in a statement that the astronauts selected for the Gaganyaan mission are waiting to fly in 2025. "After the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon's South Pole, ISRO is working day and night to develop technologies to make the Gaganyaan mission possible. Bringing back the astronauts safely is a very important aspect of this mission. We need to develop a lot of technology to make it possible and we are working day and night to make it possible. He had said that in the last few years, many technologies have been developed afresh and made successful.

NASA will Train

The US space agency NASA will also train these astronauts for the mission in late 2024 and this was confirmed by NASA's Bill Nelson in Delhi (in 2023). The astronauts have been selected at the IAF's Institute of Aerospace Medicine.

What will India gain?

If the Gaganyaan mission is successful, India will join a select list of countries that have launched crewed spacecraft on their own. Currently, only the United States, Russia and China have this capability.
