Bharat Ratna is the country's highest civilian award. This time, the Narendra Modi-led government has announced to give Bharat Ratna to former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, LK Advani, Narasimha Rao, MS Swaminathan and Chaudhary Charan Singh.
So far, 53 people have been honoured
So far, 53 personalities have been honoured with this highest honour, which started about 68 years ago. It was first awarded in 1954 to the first Governor-General of independent India, Chakravarti Raj Gopalachari, scientist Chandrasekhara Venkataraman and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Jannayak Karpoori Thakur, L. K. Advani, Chaudhary Charan Singh, P. V. Narasimha Rao and M. S. Swaminathan are among the 53 people who have been awarded the Bharat Ratna so far. However, now Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief Mayawati has demanded Bharat Ratna to Kashiram as well. At the same time, Raj Thackeray has also demanded to give Balasaheb Thackeray with respect.
