A dry day is a day or date on which the sale of alcohol in government shops, clubs, bars, etc. is prohibited. It could be a festival or an election day. Recently, the Delhi government had declared November 24 as dry day to mark the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Dry days vary from state to state. It completely depends on the special festivals and special occasions of the states. Dry days coincide with national holidays such as January 26 (Republic Day), August 15 (Independence Day), and October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti).
Dry days are kept on special religious festivals to avoid hurting religious sentiments. On national festivals, liquor shops are closed in honour of martyrs and freedom fighters. Also, dry days are sometimes declared during elections or to maintain law and order.
The government bans the sale of liquor on the occasion of three national festivals such as August 15, Gandhi Jayanti and Republic Day. These include some important religious days like Ram Navami, Eid, Guru Ravidas Jayanti, Holi.
