17 August 2023: The Chandrayaan 3 team successfully separated the Vikram Lander module from the Propulsion Module on 17th August. It is planning to initiate deboosting on 18th August and the lander module will be prepared for a soft touchdown. 

The team of highly-skilled scientists and engineers performed all maneuvers precisely. The lander module is expected to attempt a soft landing on 23 August.

16 August 2023: ISRO carried out a critical operation on August 16 to lower the orbit of Vikram Lander. It achieved the lower-moon orbit of 151 km x 179 km when the lander fired thrusters to steadily decrease the altitude. This critical maneuver was successful and the Vikram Lander is one step closer to landing on the lunar surface. 

14 August 2023: The Chandrayaan 3 mission got into the orbit circularisation phase on 14 August. The mission control team performed precise maneuvres to take the space vehicle into the near-circular orbit around the moon. 

9 August 2023: ISRO published a Tweet on 9 August displaying a picture of Moon-bound maneuvres. This Chandrayaan 3 update revealed the maneuver was successful and the spacecraft’s orbit was successfully reduced to 174 km x 1437 km.

5 August 2023: The Indian Space Research Organization successfully took Chandrayaan 3 into lunar orbit on 5th August. It achieved 164 km x 18074 km orbit on that day. The spacecraft also took pictures of the Moon on 5 August. It captured high-quality images of lunar craters and those pics got Indians pretty excited.

1 August 2023: ISRO inserted the Chandrayaan spacecraft into the translunar orbit on 1st August. It achieved 288 km x 369328 km orbit on that day and got prepared for Lunar-Orbit Insertion.

ISRO set up the National Lunar Mission Task Force to assess the technical knowhow required to launch a lunar mission. ISRO used the PSLV-XL rocket to launch the Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008. It took India’s Moon Impact Probe to the moon and discovered water on the moon.

The Chandrayaan 2 mission was approved by the First Manmohan Singh government in 2008. It got postponed and rescheduled to 2016 because the lander module was not fully developed. India was reliant on the lunar lander and it could not provide it in 2015. ISRO launched Chandrayaan 2 on 22 July 2019 by using the LVM3 rocket. The launch was successful, but the lander crash-landed on the lunar surface. The orbiter from the Chandrayaan 2 mission is still functional and collecting important data from the lunar surface.

The Chandrayaan 3 mission was announced by ISRO in November 2019. ISRO wanted to launch Chandrayaan 3 in 2020 or 2021, but the pandemic made it extremely tough. Attempting a soft landing on the moon is one of the main objectives of the Chandrayaan 3 mission. The lander is taking a 6-wheeled Rover to the moon. ISRO will complete the main objective of soft landing on August 23rd. It will carry out various Rover operations on the lunar surface. 

ISRO has equipped the Rover with scientific payloads to explore the lunar surface and investigate the surrounding area. It got Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope to analyse the chemical composition of the moon’s surface. The Rover will use the Alpha Practical Spectrometer (APXS) to analyse lunar soil and rocks.

  • Although the Chandrayaan-2 lander crash-landed on the moon, ISRO is still using the orbiter for scientific research. It clicked high-resolution pictures of the moon to reveal rilles, craters, and boulders. Scientists from all over the world are using those pictures to study the moon’s geological evolution. 

The Chandrayaan-3 mission will research to find out whether there was water on the moon or not. The Lunar Rover will assess the soil and lunar rocks from the previously untouched surface of the moon.
