A to Z of Cricket Red Card

Cricket is not just a game. It invokes a thousand emotions and brings people together. And in a game like cricket which is followed religiously by millions across the world, any kind of misconduct on the field has serious repercussions.

And cricket red card is all about controlling such misconduct on the field lest the sanctity of the game should get lost. PrimeNewsly brings an insight into the cricket red card history and cricket red card rule.

What is a Cricket Red Card?

Soccer fans across the globe are familiar with red and blue cards in the game. But in cricket, this comes as a surprise because this has never been heard of in this game.

A Cricket Red Card is issued to a player whose conduct on the field is inappropriate. This means that the player to whom the red card is issued will have to leave the field and the other players will have to continue playing the game. Now this can put the team under oodles of pressure and have a significant impact on their performance. While it adversely affects the on-going game, a red card issued to the player can have dire consequences on his career too.

Changing the strategy after losing one player and then competing against the opposing team at the ninth hour is no joke and for this reason, the cricket red card has come under the lens of the game pundits, fans and players after the first-ever Cricket Red Card has been issued to Sunil Narine.

What is Cricket Red Card History?

Caribbean Premier League takes the onus of issuing a red card in cricket for the first time in the history of the game to Sunil Narine, Trinbago Knight Rider’s spinners in one of the matches against St. Kitts and Navis Patriots. The incident happened on 27th August 2023 and since then has been creating ripples in the cricket fraternity.

What is the Cricket Red Card Rule?

Now you cannot issue a red card to any random player. There has to be some untoward incident which has to force the umpire to issue a red card to any player.

The whole aim of issuing a red card is to maintain discipline on the field. To avoid cases of physical assault, abusive language and harsh behaviour, a red card is issued. As far as the cricket red car rule is concerned, it says that:

The team will be issued the red card in the final over of the innings if the bowling team falls back in schedule while playing the game. This is a penalty on slow bowling and will result in the team losing a player and forcing the team to have 6 fielders in the 30-yard circle.

  • As per the schedule, the teams have 85 minutes to bowl 20 overs.
  • 17th over should be completed by 72 minutes and 15 seconds, failing which the 5th fielder will be forced inside the 30-yard circle.
  • 18th over should be bowled by 76 minutes and 30 seconds, failing which 6th player will be forcefully brought inside the 30-yard circle.
  • And 19th over should be completed by 80 minutes and 45 seconds. If there is any lag in this time frame, then a red card will be issued and the team will end up losing one player on the field.

How does the red card in cricket affect the game?

Red card in cricket will severely affect the dynamics of the game. Last-minute changes in strategy can turn the tables for the team. Adapting swiftly to the change after a player goes missing is not something usual and there comes lots of pressure on the other players who have to compensate for this loss.

Not only does the issuance of a red card hamper the morale of the team, but it can have adverse consequences on the reputation and career of the player.

Are there any controversies surrounding the cricket red card?

The gentleman’s game has always held a prestigious position. But there have been instances in the past when the players verbally abused each other and invited widespread protests for the behaviours.

But the veterans say that the cricket red card is something ridiculous as it mars the spirit of the game. Inconsistency in arriving at the decision poses a serious thought as to whether red card issuance is a fruitful or futile effort.

Can you get a red card in cricket?

Given the recent developments in CPL (Caribbean Premier League) when Sunil Narine was issued a red card, it is evident that a red card is now a thing in cricket as well.

What is the red card player’s name?

Sunil Narine is the first player to have got red card in cricket. He had to face the penalty because of his team’s slow overrate.

What is the Red Card Cricket Team Name?

Trinbago Knight Riders from Caribbean Premier League is the first team to receive the red card.

Concluding Lines:

The introduction of the cricket red card is an intriguing subject because it has stirred controversies and shall do so in the future as well. In an attempt to create a healthy environment on the field, the umpires have this powerful card that they can use as the time comes. But it is for the spectators to watch and react when and where the next red card gets issued.

Till then, stay tuned for more updates.
