Atal Setu: Mumbai Trans Harbour Link: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the country's longest bridge 'Atal Setu'. Modi had laid the foundation stone of the bridge in December 2016. The total cost of the bridge is Rs 17,843 crore.
Atal Setu is a 21.8 km long bridge. The bridge connects Mumbai's Sewri and Nhava Sheva areas of Raigad district. With the help of this bridge, the distance between the two places will be reduced from the current time of 2 hours to about 15-20 minutes. This bridge will also reduce the distance between Mumbai and Pune. Around 70,000 vehicles are expected to cross the bridge every day. It is the 12th longest sea bridge in the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, the country's longest sea bridge. The bridge has been named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (Atal Setu) has been built at a cost of Rs 17,840 crore. PM Modi had laid the foundation stone of the country's longest sea bridge in December 2016.
Atal Setu full name is Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu. It was earlier known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). It is a 22-km-long twin-carriageway six-lane bridge over Thane Creek in the Arabian Sea. Atal Setu connects Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle in Raigad district.
The bridge is about 21.8 km long six-lane bridge, with a length of about 16.5 km over the sea and about 5.5 km on land. It will provide direct connectivity to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport and also reduce travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa and South India. It will also improve connectivity between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port, the statement said.
The noise barriers have been erected on the 8.5 -km stretch of the bridge and side barricading has been done on the 6-km stretch. In addition, sound barriers and advanced lighting have been installed on the bridge for the safety of birds and sea creatures.
In 2017, it signed agreements with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The work on the project began in April 2018. The deadline was set for August 2023. On an average, 5,403 labourers and engineers worked daily to complete the project.
