Bowlers Taken 4+ wickets in one Over in Cricket History: Test, ODI,  and T20

Taking even a single wicket in an international cricket match is a huge feat. Bowlers practice consistently to hone their skills and find ways of beating the batsmen. Some of them have lived truly special moments during their international careers and delivered remarkable performances.

Today, we are going to discuss the achievement of bowlers with 4 wickets in one over. Very few bowlers have achieved that feat. Their performances have turned the table against the opponent teams and paved the way towards a befitting victory. So, let’s find out which bowlers took four wickets in one over in an international cricket match.

Test Cricket

Batsmen bat pretty patiently in a test match. They avoid playing deliveries makes them vulnerable to losing their wicket. Some talented bowlers still found a way to dismiss not just one, but four batsmen in an international test match. Those bowlers are:

  • Maurice Allom: England vs. New Zealand (1930)

Maurice was a part of England’s squad when he debuted for the national team. It was a dream start to his career when he got a 5-wicket haul against New Zealand in 1929-30. The Kiwi team was playing its first test match. Maurice destroyed the entire middle-order of the Kiwi team in the first inning.

The New Zealand team’s score was 21 runs for 3 wickets when Maurice started his killer over. He got Stuart Dempster on the 2nd ball, Lowry on the 4th ball, Ken James on the 5th ball, and Ted Badcock on the last ball of his over. England had won that memorable test match by 8 wickets and Maurice Allom became one of the first bowlers with 4 wickets in one over

  • Ken Cranston: England vs. South Africa (1947)

It was again an English bowler, who took four wickets in an over. Ken Cranston was an English all-rounder in the 2nd test match against South Africa (1947) when he repeated the remarkable achievement. It wasn’t that era when people used to wonder how many wickets in an over a bowler could take.

However, Cranston was playing his 2nd test match. It was South Africa’s second inning when Cranston started bowling. He got George Fullerton, Tufty Mann, Lindsay Tuckett, and Ian Smith out in that test match.

  • Fred Titmus: England vs. New Zealand (1965)

Kiwis wouldn’t have thought that another English bowler would make a history of taking four wickets against their team. It was Fred Titmus, who got the entire New Zealand lower order out in his magical over in a 1965 test match.

Titmus got the entire New Zealand team tail out. He took the wickets of John Reid, Bryan Yuile, Bob Blair, and, Bruce Morrison in his killer over. England won that match by an inning and 47 runs!

  • Chris Old vs. Pakistan (1978)

Chris Old’s remarkable performance helped England secure an easy victory against Pakistan in 1978. The English pacer took 7 wickets for 50 runs in that memorable test match, which took place in Edgbaston.

Chris got Wasim Raja, Wasim Bari, Iqbal Qasim, and Sikandar Bakht out in that test match. Pakistan’s team’s score was 125 for 5 when Chris came to bowl. It tanked to 125 for 9 after that memorable over.

  • Wasim Akram vs. West Indies (1991)

The legendary Pakistani all-rounder “Wasim Akram” shocked the cricket world by taking four wickets against West Indies in the 1991 Lahore Test. Sadly, Pakistan could not secure the match because it was drawn by the West Indian team.

Wasim got Jeff Dujon, Curtly Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall, and Courtney Walsh out in that thrilling over. The retired Pakistani all-rounder has held many records and this four-wicket haul was certainly a special one for young Wasim Akram. You must have started wondering has any bowler taken 6 wickets in an over. Find out the answer later in this post.

  • Andrew Caddick vs. West Indies (2000)

Another English bowler on the list. Andrew Caddick took four wickets in an over against West Indies on the Leed’s cricket ground. This thrilling bowling performance helped England wrap up the West Indies team’s score on a mere 61 runs.

The English bowler got Ridley Jacobs, Nixon McLean, Curtly Ambrose, and Reon King out in his memorable over. He also got the last wicket of Courtney Walsh.

T-20 Cricket

There is only one bowler, who took 4 wickets in one over in a T-20 international match. He destroyed the Kiwi team’s four top-order batsmen in the third over of the DFCC Bank Cup.

Malinga got Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Coli de Grandhomme, and Ross Taylor out in that thrilling over. He is the only bowler with the most wickets in one over T20 international match.

One Day Cricket

Cricketing nations have been playing one-day cricket matches for more than 50 years. Yet, only 5 bowlers have succeeded in taking four or more wickets in one over in a One-Day International cricket match. Those bowlers are:

  • Chaminda Vaas vs. Bangladesh (2003 World Cup)

Vaas is one of the most feared pacers of his era. Sri Lanka was playing a group match against Bangladesh in the 2003 World Cup and Vaas was bowling the first over of the inning in Pietermaritzburg. He got Hannan Sarkar, Al Sahariar, Mohammad Ashraful, Ehsanul Haque, and Sanuar Hosain out in the first over of the match.

  • Mohammad Sami vs. New Zealand (2003)

Mohammad Sami was a Pakistani Pacer, who played 87 ODI matches for his team and took 121 wickets. He performed exceptionally well in the 2nd ODI match of the 2003 New Zealand vs. Pakistan ODI series. He took 5 wickets for 10 runs and helped his team secure a 124-run victory over the Kiwi team.

Sami got Jacob Oram, Tama Canning, Daniel Vettori, and Paul Hitchcock out in the 37th over of the match. It was a remarkable performance by one of the fastest Pakistani bowlers of that era. However, the record of the most wickets in a single ODI match belongs to another Asian bowler.

  • Lasith Malinga vs. South Africa (2007)

Lasith Malinga is currently the only bowler, who took four wickets in an over in two international cricket matches. He was ICC World Cup 2007 when Sri Lanka was playing against South Africa. Malinga took four wickets on four balls in that match. He got Shaun Pollock, Andrew Hall, Jacques Kallis and Makhaya Ntini out in that match. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka could not secure the victory and South Africa won that ODI match by 1 wicket.

  • Adil Rashid vs. West Indies (2019)

Rashid is another English bowler, who got 4 wickets in an international cricket match. England was touring West Indies in 2019 and it was the 4th One-day international match of the ODI series.

Rashid got Ashley Nurse, Carlos Brathwaite, Devendra Bishoo, and Oshane Thomas out in the 48th over of the match. England won that match by 29 runs.

  • Mohammad Siraj vs. Sri Lanka (Asia Cup 2023)

Mohammad Siraj became the first Indian bowler to take 4 wickets in an over in an ODI match. He was bowling against Sri Lanka in the 2023 Asia Cup final. It was 4th over and the bowl was swinging.

Mohammad Siraj got Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjay De Silva out in that thrilling over. The entire Sri Lankan team got out for 50 runs in that match. India won the match and the Asia Cup without losing any wickets.

How Many Bowlers Have Taken 10 Wickets in an Inning?

Everyone thinks about Anil Kumble when people wonder how many bowlers have taken 10 wickets in an innings. He is not the only bowler who has achieved that astonishing feat in a cricket match.

  • Jim Laker was the first bowler to take 10 wickets in a match. This English bowler created that remarkable record in a test match against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956. He took 19 total wickets in that match!
  • Anil Kumble became the 2nd bowler to take 10 wickets in an innings. The Pakistan cricket team was touring India in 1999 and it was the 2nd test match. Kumble took only 4 wickets in the first Pakistani innings. It was a whole better performance in the 2nd innings because Kumble got the entire Pakistani team out in the 2nd inning of the 1999 Delhi test match. He took a total of 14 wickets in that test match.
  • Aijaz Patel is a Kiwi spinner of Indian origin, who became the 3rd bowler in the history of an international test match to take 10 wickets. The New Zealand cricket team was touring India in 2021. It was the 2nd test match of the series. Patel sent the entire Indian batting order back to the pavilion in the first innings. It wasn’t enough to beat team India because New Zealand lost that test match by 372 runs!
