Big Upset, Afghanistan beat Australia in Super-8 stage of T20 World Cup

AUS vs AFG: Afghanistan has made the battle of Group A in the Super-8 of the T20 World Cup 2024 exciting by defeating Australia. He has bowled Australia out. Chasing a target of 149, Australia were bundled out for 127. This is Afghanistan's first win in the Super-8 stage. Afghanistan won the match by 21 runs.

Afghanistan's openers Gurbaz and Zadran added 118 runs

Afghanistan scored 148 runs by losing 6 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Their opening pair of Gurbaz and Zadran added 118 runs in 15.5 overs. With 9 wickets in hand, it seemed that Afghanistan would make their score very big. But, after the first wicket, the momentum shifted towards the Australian bowlers.

Cummins' Hat-trick went in Vain

For Australia, Pat Cummins took a hat-trick in the match. He became the first bowler to take back-to-back hat-tricks against Afghanistan in T20 cricket and in the T20 World Cup. Cummins was the most successful bowler for Australia with 3 wickets for 28 runs in 4 overs. Jumpa also took 2 wickets.

Australian batsmen struggled against the Afghanistan

Now Australia had a target of 149 runs in front of them, which did not seem very difficult considering their batting strength. But then, the identity of the Afghanistan team is also its bowling. Afghanistan's bowlers posed a good challenge to the Australian batsmen, which they could not overcome and fell 21 runs short of the target. Glenn Maxwell top-scored for Australia with 59. This was the third meeting between Afghanistan and Australia in ICC tournaments. Earlier in the T20 World Cup 2022, Australia defeated Afghanistan by 4 wickets in Adelaide. Australia defeated Afghanistan by 3 wickets in the 2023 ODI World Cup. But in the West Indies, history did not repeat itself, it was reversed. Afghanistan beat Australia for the third time to take their head-to-head record to 1-2.
