With Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan not playing first-class cricket and focusing only on the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to make it mandatory for him to play a few Ranji Trophy matches to participate in the cash-rich T20 league. It is learnt that the BCCI officials have already directed Kishan to play in Jharkhand's last league match against Rajasthan at Jamshedpur from February 16.

Kishan had returned home midway through the South Africa tour due to travel fatigue and did not play any match after that it did not go down well with the BCCI officials. Meanwhile, he was seen training with newly-appointed Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya in Baroda even as his Ranji team Jharkhand was not doing well. There is a consensus that a strict policy needs to be put in place so that young players do not make it a habit to play only in the IPL.

"The BCCI policymakers are well aware that some players don't want to play red-ball cricket. If he is out of the Indian team, he does not join his state team during the first-class season after playing in a few matches of the Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament.''

What did Dravid say on Kishan's return?

In his career so far, Kishan has played two Tests, 27 ODIs and 32 T20Is for India. The 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has scored 78,933 and 796 runs respectively. Recently, head coach Rahul Dravid had spoken about the return of Ishan Kishan, saying he will have to play "some cricket" to make it to the team. "There is a definite way back for everyone. Whenever he is ready, he has to play some cricket and come back. It's up to him to decide when he starts playing. We are not forcing him to do anything.

"To prevent players from doing so, the board can make it mandatory to play three-four matches of the Ranji Trophy. If the player doesn't do that, he can't play in the IPL and even if his franchise releases him, he can't participate in the IPL auction. “The state units are of the view that the BCCI should make some strict rules in this regard so that the youngsters don't look down upon the Ranji Trophy," the official said.''

It is also learnt that the Indian team management is upset with such players who do not want to play in the Ranji Trophy even if they are fit. "We can understand Hardik Pandya's case as his body can't take the workload of red-ball cricket. He can't take the workload of Test cricket and it is important for India that he is fit for ICC events. "But there are some other young players, when I talk to them, they say they are working on their fitness." This practice has to be stopped at some level.''
