Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports confers the Arjuna Award to the player whose contribution to cricket has been outstanding during the year. Arjuna Award 2023 cricket is likely to be conferred to Mohammad Shammi whose performance during the Cricket World Cup Championship was powerful and rocking.

With 24 wickets in his kitty, he was the highest wicket taken of the tournament and keeping this in mind, he is on the Arjuna Award 2023 nominations list.

Arjuna Award 2023

  • Before the introduction of Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 1991-92, Arjuna Award was the highest award to celebrate the victory of sportsmen in the country.
  • In 1977, the purview of Arjuna Award was expanded to honour sportsmen in the physically handicapped category and indigenous games were also included in the list of the awardees.
  • Lifetime contribution category in sports was included in Arjuna Award list in 1995.
  • In 2018, it was decided that Arjuna Award would be given to the disciplines which have been included in the Olympics, Asian Games, Paralympics, Commonwealth and World Championships (including Cricket World Cup)
  • Arjuna Awards 2023 winners list includes 15 names as the number was fixed but relaxation has been given to recognize sportspersons who have outshone in the sport and brought laurels to the nation.
  • It has been decided over the years that one award must be given in the physically challenged category.
  • A 12-member committee comprising of Justice AM Khanwilkar (Retired Supreme Court Justice), boxer Akhil Kumar, power lifter Farman Pasha, Anjum Chopra (former Indian women’s cricket team captain), Dhanraj Pillay and many other renowned sportspersons will be in the committee to decide who bags the award.

Salim Durani was the first cricketer to receive Arjuna Award in 1961. He was a slow left arm orthodox bowler who played 29 tests for India in which he scored 1202 runs and picked 75 wickets.

The date for the official ceremony for the Arjuna Award hasn’t been announced yet.

Arjuna Awards 2023 winners list has not been revealed by the Sports Authority of India yet.

Anna Lumdsen, the legendary hockey player was the first woman to receive Arjuna Award.
