According to the website of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, Maharishi Bhrigu was the first person to visit the holy Amarnath cave. The belief is that once the Kashmir valley was submerged in water, Maharishi Kashyap pumped out the water through rivers and drains. In those days sage Bhrigu had come by the same route on a journey to the Himalayas and was in search of solitude for penance. He then visited the holy cave shrine of Baba Amarnath. Since then lakhs of devotees started visiting this holy cave in the month of Shravan (July-August).
However, the existence of the holy Amarnath cave is mentioned in the Puranas. Along with this, historian Kalhana has also mentioned the Amarnath cave in his book 'Rajatarangini'. French traveller Francois Bernier has also mentioned Amarnath Yatra in detail in his book. However, there is also a story that in the year 1850, a shepherd named Buta Malik rediscovered the Amarnath cave.
In ancient times this cave was called 'Amareshwar'. It is also called 'Baba Barfani' due to the formation of Shivlinga from snow. The Amarnath cave shrine is located in the Himalayan foothills and is considered to be one of the holiest shrines for Hindus. It is believed that any devotee who visits the Shivlinga made in this holy cave with a true heart, gets salvation.
