After 49 Days, Arvind Kejriwal gets interim bail till June 1, Victory of Democracy

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been released from Tihar Jail. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024, in the Delhi liquor scam case. After being in ED custody for about 10 days, the court had on April 1 sent Kejriwal to judicial custody in Tihar Jail. After which Kejriwal has come out of Tihar Jail in 49 days. The release of Kejriwal reminded that his first government also lasted only 49 days. He resigned subsequently.

ED sent first summons on November 2, 2023

The turning point in the investigation of the liquor scam case came when the ED sent the first summons to Kejriwal on November 2, 2023. Kejriwal did not appear before the ED. After this, a total of 9 summons were sent by the ED, but Kejriwal did not appear before the agency for questioning. Meanwhile, the Election Commission also announced general elections in the country on March 16. On March 21, just five days after the announcement of the election, ED officials reached Kejriwal's house with the 10th summons. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED after a search of his house.

Supreme Court has granted interim bail till June 1 to Kejriwal

There is good news for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Supreme Court has granted interim bail till June 1 to Kejriwal, who is facing a probe by the ED in a money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy scam. His wife Sunita Kejriwal is very happy with the bail. "This is a victory of democracy," she added.

A bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna had recently told Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, counsel for the Enforcement Directorate, that it is likely to pass an order on interim relief to Kejriwal on Friday. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering probe related to alleged irregularities in the (now-defunct) Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

Supreme Court Rejected ED Plea

The ED had recently filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing Kejriwal's bail plea. The central agency had said that the right to campaign in elections is neither a fundamental right nor constitutional. Kejriwal's legal team had strongly objected to the ED's affidavit. However, the court rejected the ED's plea and granted bail to Kejriwal.
